St. Helena Island is a true original. If you are familiar with Hilton Head Island, Beaufort's distant cousin to the south, St. Helena Island looks much like Hilton Head did 32 years ago, when my family first vacationed there. Largely rural, St. Helena is the Lowcountry of old. It is so beautiful, that there is a little division on how much of this spectacular island should be developed, and how much should be kept rural. There are some excellent real estate opportunities on St. Helena Island. If you are seeking waterfront property or acreage, St. Helena Island may be right up your alley. Flanked by the distinct communities of Lands End and Coffin Point, St. Helena Island stretches from Port Royal Sound to St. Helena Sound, and is framed in by Cowan Creek and the Harbor River. If you are looking for a planned community, St. Helena has much to offer, as well. The most obvious might be Dataw Island, developed in the mid-1980s by Alcoa South Carolina. Alcoa did everything right with Dataw, from the Pete Dye golf courses to the Dataw marina, considered by many to be one of the best on the East Coast. And there are other real estate opportunities.Dataw Island is a very short drive to historic downtown Beaufort. Bermuda Bluff is a gated community along the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway. Polawana Island is another community whose developer got it right. Polawana features huge, private lots, and some of the best deep water access in the area. For more information on any of these communities, don't hesitate to visit www.ExploreBeaufortRealEstate.com, or call me at 843.263.6886.
